Current forecast indicates Category 4 hurricane equivalent winds in Taiwan
Super Typhoon Kong-Rey (Leon in the Philippines) is currently on track to make landfall in Taiwan as an immensely powerful storm. According to the Central Weather Administration (CWA) Report No. 10, Super Typhoon Kong-Rey is located in the Philippine Sea with maximum sustained winds of 53 m/s (119 mph) and minimum central pressure of 915 mb, making Kong-Rey one of the strongest, late-season typhoons to impact Taiwan.
According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) Warning Number 23, Super Typhoon Kong-Rey will make landfall just south of Taitung City on the east coast of Taiwan on Oct. 31 at 2 pm local time (6 am UTC) with maximum sustained winds of 213 km/h (132 mph), making Kong-Rey a Category 4 hurricane-equivalent storm (Figure 1).
In addition to extreme winds, forecasters expect heavy rainfall over substantial portions of the island. Torrential rain is possible in the mountainous areas of southern Yilan and western Hualien Counties, leading to an elevated risk of landslides. The CWA expects extremely heavy rain as far north as Taipei and as far south as southern Taitung County along the east coast (Figure 2).
The CoreLogic Hazard HQ Command Central™ team will watch Super Typhoon Long-Rey and its impacts in Taiwan. Added analysis of the impacts will be provided after landfall.
